The number of permanent and temporary workers summed may not equal the worker total shown due to rounding.
A temporary worker may be employed in an alternative work arrangement, though this is not necessarily the case. Temporary work is defined and measured separately from the four major categories of alternative work arrangements. Estimates of employment shown in the table are based on 2000 Census-based population controls. All employed persons, except unpaid family workers, were included in the survey.

Definitions:
Temporary workers are persons who do not expect their jobs to last or who report that their jobs are temporary. Wage and salary workers are included, including those who have been employed for more than one year and anticipate continued employment for the upcoming year. Independent contractors and self-employed individuals are included if they expect their position to continue for one year or less and have been working as an independent contractor or self-employed worker up to, but not exceeding, one year. Permanent workers are employed persons who do not fall into the temporary category as defined above.
